IBM supercomputers greenest, fastest

It's hard to imagine some of the world's most massive, powerful supercomputers can be classified as energy efficient or green. But researchers have done an impressive job of squeezing serious power out of some major systems. And according to the Green500.org group, Big Blue it seems can be called Big Green as IBM's systems nailed down the top 20 most energy efficient supercomputers in the world.

For starters, cut the pain and cost of HP ITSM

And what better way to start cutting IT costs than by running rapidly away from HP ITSM products? Consider ITSM via SaaS. Service-now.com has a white paper coming out next week that profiles two enterprise IT shops who said enough is enough, ditched HP Service Desk and are now using IT service management on demand.

GroundWork's New NMS Functionality

Any network infrastructure or voice environment of any scale requires an adaptable network monitoring environment to proactively keep tabs on the system. Potential problems and outages can be identified and recognized earlier with the appropriate monitoring environment.

Yesterday, GroundWork released Network Management Suite 2.1, a new version of NMS that introduces new features, including "single sign-on, simplified installation, consolidated monitoring data and comprehensive online user documentation integrated with GroundWork Monitor."

What do you think of Compuware’s Vantage?

In this week’s application performance management series we solicit feedback from Compuware customers about their experiences with the Vantage product lineup. Through aggressive acquisition, Compuware has assembled the requisite components to position itself against the “big four” management vendors—IBM, CA, BMC, and HP.

"Finding your way has never been easier" Right...

Reading this article reminded me of this piece of HP collateral I picked up at itSMF about a month ago. At the time I had a good laugh at the seemingly contradictory tag line and corresponding map. "Easy" and that map don't seem to match up.

Earlier today I heard HP already has more than 5000 software SKUs. Imagine adding another layer of CA-CA to this mess.

HP, Tandberg join to rival Cisco TelePresence package and service

Cisco TelePresence rivals HP and Tandberg have gotten together to sell a joint telepresence package that involves HP reselling Tandberg's telepresence gear, even though HP has its own Halo telepresence family.
merger

If HP is wise, it will use this opportunity to leverage the excellent workers of EDS and rid EDS of the absolutely awful mid management team. This team is notorious amongst the employees for lack of integrity and self focus. This will be an excellent merger if these absolutely souless managers are exited asap before they can infect the HP employees. Dont look at rigged employee surveys, just ask the employees and the customers what they think of EDS management. Your jaw will drop.

What we saw at Interop NY

Last week’s Interop in New York City was eerily normal considering the carnage Wall Street was experiencing just blocks away. Although attendance was modest, vendors told us there were enough qualified and savvy buyers to make the show worthwhile for them. Word is that IT budgets are not being frozen despite economic uncertainty—at least not yet.

The coolness factor of the show was kicked up several notches by the fact that a third of the hall was devoted to Web 2.0-themed exhibitors with names like KickApps, Yuuguu, Kapow Technologies, and Zude. The Web 2.0 portion of the show drew bigger crowds than the “legacy” portion as curious attendees explored new (and opportunistically repositioned) wares. A small portion of the hall was also devoted to Mobile Business Expo, which had a legacy feel to it.

All things virtual featured prominently at this fall’s show, telepresence came into its own, and desktop videoconferencing solutions were prominent. With travel costs skyrocketing, we predict telepresence and desktop video will be up front and center at Interop next spring. Desktop videoconferencing has been around a long time, and may finally be catching on. If so, brace yourselves for a Pandora’s box of enterprise network headaches opened by new infrastructure and large bandwidth demands. The sheer scale of desktop deployments can quickly overload network links and QoS deployments.

GroundWork's Silver Bullet: 87% Cost Savings Over HP

Simple question: Would you like to save 87% on a Network Monitoring System for your enterprise? The simple answer is almost always an enthusiastic "yes!" Groundwork Open Source made this substantial cost savings study "real" this morning in a press release and cost comparison study, detailing the potential savings from Groundwork Open Source vs. HP Operations Manager.

In a head-to-head comparison study of initial licensing, installation costs and recurring costs over a three-year period for a 3,000-node environment, GroundWork Open Source was found to provide the following advantages when compared to equivalent HP Software offerings."

"This study examines in detail the cost savings offered by GroundWork relative to comparable offerings of HP software," said Tim Clark, partner at The FactPoint Group. "The results of this study were based off of data gathered from the April 2008 HP Software BTO Price Guide, a combination of customers who have used HP software and collaboration with HP software resellers." (GroundWork)

I had the opportunity to talk with Debra Curtis, a research vice president in the Gartner IT Operations Management group. She clearly highlighted that the 'big four' network management system vendors (HP, BMC, CA, IBM), simply do not have a single dominant share in the market. Specialist vendors, like GroundWork, are able to deliver on impressive feature sets at a reduced capital cost. When asked about the risk of corporations investing in an open-source NMS solution, Curtis noted that "(investing in) open-source is not an additional source of concern."

I'm guessing it will get super hot and destroy the hinges also...even as the regular batteries do on HP laptops. Many know what I mean.

Why I didn't buy an HP laptop

I just had to buy a new laptop computer. In the past I've had ones from Dell, IBM, HP, Toshiba, and other now-forgotten brands. The most recent is an HP my wife bought. I have a variety of standard issues with it (she chose an extra-wide screen, the machine gets awfully hot if you actually put it in your lap, both the battery and the Windows installation are now so old as to barely function). But I also was greatly annoyed when I attempted to deal with HP's support organization. Not that I love Dell or IBM support, but my experience with HP was a whole other level of bad.

ProCurve + Colubris- What to Expect

With HP ProCurve’s acquisition of wireless provider Colubris, what should the industry expect?

Oh, who knows… but people have asked my opinion, so I’ll share my thoughts, musings and speculations with the masses.

You can find more information and read my initial reactions in Andrew’s write-up of the CRN release ProCurve’s Colubris Buy A ‘Great Move’

Hey, Dell, get off of my cloud!

Rejected! Dell gets denied at the cloud-computing goal line by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. No "cloud computing" trademark for Dell. Dell trying to trademark "cloud computing" would be like Microsoft trying to trademark "desktop computing." Too many companies use the term cloud computing to describe online services for Dell or anyone else to attempt to swoop in and trademark the term right from under the market. It would create turmoil for what is already a generalized and widely used term. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Yahoo, IBM, HP and others all offer what they term cloud computing or cloud services.
Why would Dell lay claim to the term cloud computing?

Why does Cisco care about HP's Colubris buy?

Interesting that Cisco's Analyst Relations blog wants to know your views on the recent move by HP to acquire WLAN vendor Colubris. Nicole Hall, writing in Cisco's blog poses a question: "This gives ProCurve, HPs networking division, their .11n and vertical angle ...so does this mean ProCurve will become a 'Real' player in WLAN? Interested in your thoughts?" Why does Cisco care?

Well, here are some thoughts from John Cox, Network World senior editor who follows the wireless industry:

Inaccurate/Fuzzy Details?

I read elsewhere that HP denies having *any* relationship with this company -- were facts checked for this story? Also, details provided seem very fuzzy about a potential product that "could result in an adaptor...onto a HP or CA product." Yikes!

Also, quoting analyst research by a "former IDC analyst"?
