It's hard to imagine some of the world's most massive, powerful supercomputers can be classified as energy efficient or green. But researchers have done an impressive job of squeezing serious power out of some major systems. And according to the Green500.org group, Big Blue it seems can be called Big Green as IBM's systems nailed down the top 20 most energy efficient supercomputers in the world. In fact, IBM also grabbed 39 of the top 50 positions.
The Green500 list includes supercomputers from across the globe being used for a variety of applications such as astronomy, climate prediction and pharmaceutical research. Researchers said the average energy efficiency of IBM systems on the Green500 list is 135.58 Mflops per watt, much higher than the 76.34 megaflops per watt average of non-IBM systems and more than double that of HP, with a total system energy efficiency average of 57.22 megaflops per watt, according to IBM.
The Green500.org. list goes hand-in-hand with the TOP500.org list of worldwide supercomputers announced this week.
