20 years is way too long - our struggle with radical Islam will have impoverished us by then. There is one, and only one short term fix to foreign oil dependence - stop using oil AT ALL for personal transportation. We need to mandate Flex Fuel modifications for all cars sold (used or new) so that when alternate fuels become available they are immediately able to be used. A mandate is required because it won't happen without it, and we must stop using oil - or we continue to fund (indirectly) Al Qaida and others who attack us. What war has ever been won funding both sides? Brazil has shown that this can be done for a large nation - surely the US can copy their lead.
