The telco's are terrified of having cell phone/pda's with WIFI in them because it takes the user away from their limited bandwidth garden and allows a variety of choice. The carriers do not want to become simply yet another internet tube for consumers to use and will fight like Hollywood fights technology to prevent wifi from spreading.

wifi power hog
Wifi in cell/pda/portable device is no threat at all - much to big a power hog compared to any 3G technology. Wifi on my pda must be shutoff or battery lasts only an hour, therefore never used. Same on laptop - wifi with screen brightness kill battery. 3G broadband is speedy, nearly ubiquitous and easy on the battery.
