COBOL is Dead

In my opinion this is a misconception in London. I did a search for jobs citing the work COBOL in London using cwjobs.co.uk anf only found 8 jobs today.

If there was a true shortage then where are these jobs? I've looked in other places as well. Also if you say there are job where are they and why would they be so hard to find? As this articles says there is a shortage.

There is no demand for COBOL any more in the job market.

And yes I do know there are billions of lines and billion of transactions got via COBOL. But the simple fact is they need less maintenance on them.

The misconception that COBOL is alive has been made here. There are even universities teaching COBOL before you learn something its always wise to look at the real demand of it yourself.

On the flip side, take a look at industries that are shrinking - like radio. People assume they will have a career until they are ready to retire - but that is not always the case. Their industry may disappear out from under them - and if they haven't kept up with technology and worked on skills/knowledge in new areas they may have trouble finding any kind of employment.

COBOL IS DEAD?

Dear Anonymous
You say that you did a search and found only eight jobs in COBOL...how many jobs do you need? Personnally, I only need two or three....

"how many jobs do you need?"

Well I need one job. But the fact is you obviously have nothing to back up on the point you a making.

"I found only 8 jobs in COBOL!!!" and hence there is no demand was my point.

Here is a link to a job search on reed.co.uk (submitted a time of post):

http://www.reed.co.uk/job/searchresults.aspx?k=cobol&jto=false&s=&l=london&lp=&ms=From&mxs=To&st=5&ns=true&da=168

for COBOL in London and it only has one result so its not even enough for you. Further its a QA role :-)

If you have years of experience than I agree you don't need many job advertisements - try telling your side to a recent graduate who is looking for a job.

If he/she did COBOL and there are 8 jobs, the competition would be great as COBOL is not in demand.

However doing a language which is in demand (such as Java, C, C# etc...) than at least they would stand a fair chance to be employed.

Stay away from COBOL if you are a recent graduate and stay away from courses which teach COBOL. Don't take my work for it, do the research yourself!!!
