Wouldn't it be possible to use a high gain antenna that could potentially cover a directional distance of 1 or 2 miles on both ends? I know there are antennas that can easily screw on the standard antenna port on most home wi-fi routers. Just a thought!

Commercial AP plus antenna
Your best bet would be a Proxim AP. They are the cheapest commercial AP with the best software available and a yagi or similar antenna at both ends.
I think the AP and antenna can be found for about $300 these days. You will probably need the same gear at both ends. www.streakwave.com sells most everything you need for this type of application. I buy from them when I need gear.

What you have to do is turn off that commercial thinking and turn the hacker one. Research cantenna and other diy dishes. It will cost you like ten bucks. The only problem that might occur is that those are directional antennas and there might be obstacles in between...Solution to that would be put it on roof which would solve it most time. Hope it helps...

The home/enterprise solution will not work, unless you have a way to modify the firmware for Ack timeout. The 2.4G band is also too crowded to make a reliable connection. You need 5.8G equipment.
The right way to do it is to purchase a pair of point-to-point bridge like the Altai A0:

They can be used for up to 5miles point-to-point, line of sight range. The software is also modified to handle this distance.
