Why VMWare could fall...if they don't wise up.
Come on - VMWare isn't dead, nor is it dying. It has the market share because it is a superior product.
I have used both VMware and Microsoft VS. Both products are good, but VMWare is much better. Only an idiot believes that MS VS is better.
That being said, I expect that MS VS will improve and eventually take a strong foothold in most SMB IT shops. Why? ...because it doesn't cost anything extra (i.e., it is part of the OS). It is simple to use and…did I mention it was *free*?
I believe you get what you pay for, and MS VS is very good for a *free product*. It isn’t as good as VMWare, but it is *good enough* for most SMB IT shops – and that makes it GOOD ENOUGH for a LOT of businesses.
Why will VMWare fail? Maybe that isn't the correct question, but they will not be as successful as their capacity would otherwise allow them. They have a superior product, but VMWare is too pious to lower their price to be competitive. An EMC representative told me that Microsoft, Citrix, Oracle (and others) aren’t considered competition because their products are not matured nor do they have the features of VMWare.
The thought that VMWare would take this position is completely arrogant and (as a VMWare customer) it is disturbing. Someday, the legacy of VMWare will be how it responded to the increasing number of competitors. The cost of VMWare is extortion – but hey, they must have enough customers that are willing to pay a premium price. And in the words of PT Barnum…”a fool and his money are soon parted”. Except in this case, most of the clients make an informed decision to spend the premium cost on VMWare because it is a premium product and the competitive products are still trying to catch up.
